Steps to running vhclserv on San Bruno Mt. map data (CA, USA) 1. Acquire and install the latest versions of vhclmaps and ivtools from http://www.vectaport.com. Build them from source for Unix/X11 (http://www.vectaport.com/pub/src/) or grab Linux 2.0 Elf binaries (http://www.vectaport.com/pub/bin/). Set your PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH (or LD_ELF_LIBRARY_PATH) environment variables appropriately. Test PATH with "which" and LD_LIBRARY_ PATH with "ldd". See http://www.vectaport.com/vhclserv/download.html for further information. 2. Acquire the 20 Meg map data tar file, either all at once: http://www.vectaport.com/pub/data/sanbrunomt.tar.gz or split into four parts: http://www.vectaport.com/pub/data/sanbrunomt.tar.gzaa http://www.vectaport.com/pub/data/sanbrunomt.tar.gzab http://www.vectaport.com/pub/data/sanbrunomt.tar.gzac http://www.vectaport.com/pub/data/sanbrunomt.tar.gzad 3. Execute the runall bash script from the sanbrunomt directory where you unpacked the tar file. This will launch two viewers (utmviewer and demviewer) and one server (vhclserv), each with their own controlling xterm. 4. To try it out: - set demviewer's initial view by using the CameraPos tool in utmviewer to draw an observer location and direction - initialize a vehicle on vhclserv with the Initialize menu option of demviewer's Vehicle menu - move the vehicle with demviewer's Vehicle/Forward, which makes it appear in utmviewer and moves the camera in demviewer - set the vehicle moving at 10 meters per second with the demviewer's Vehicle/Gas - accelerate the vehicle by 10 meters per second by repeated use of demviewer's Vehicle/Gas - steer with Vehicle/Right and Vehicle/Left - deaccelerate the vehicle by 10 meters per second by repeated use of demviewer's Vehicle/Brake - halt the vehicle by braking as needed until speed reaches zero To use frame capture on demviewer when running from a CD-ROM, edit a copy of runall.abs (from the sanbrunomt directory) if you mounted the CD-ROM somewhere else than /mnt/cdrom, and execute that script instead of the runall script on the CD-ROM in the sanbrunomt directory.
